Dr. Moses receives Nobel Peace Prize!
Dr. Clifford Moses, Senior lecturer of the Department, has his own share of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize! He is one of the co-authors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) the international team that shared the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 with former Vice-President Gore. Dr. Moses recently received his Nobel award certificate from the Chairman of the IPCC, Dr. R.K. Pachauri.

Faculty Positions in Mechanical and Energy Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) has one position to be filled by January 2010. We are recruiting to sustain the growth of an expanding department. Applications at the ranks of Assistant or Associate Professor in all areas of Mechanical Engineering are sought. We will hire an outstanding, innovative, and dynamic individual with a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field and who can help the department strengthen its teaching and research programs. Preference will be given to candidates in the areas of Energy Conversion, Renewable Energy and Thermo-Fluid Sciences.

M.E. Students Win Awards at AIAA Conference
Several of the Mechanical Engineering undergraduate and graduate students won awards at the AIAA Southwestern Regional Student Conference on April 17 and 18:
Carlos Acosta and Juan Ocampo won first place in the Team category for their paper High Performance Computing Implementation in a Risk Assessment Problem. They receive a $500 prize and travel expenses for one author to present the work at the international Aerospace Sciences meeting in Orlando, FL.
Andy Voorhees won third place in the Masters category for his paper Complex Variable Methods for Fatigue Sensitivity Analysis.
The faculty and chair of the Department extend congratulations and best wishes to these fine students of the University.

M.E. Faculty Members Receive Awards from College of Engineering
The College of Engineering of UTSA announced this year’s Excellence Awards, and both the teaching and research awards go to the M.E. faculty. Dr. Frank Chen received the 2009 Excellence in Engineering Research Award, and Dr. Randall Manteufel received the 2009 Excellence in Teaching Award. Congratulations!

Dr. Campo Receives Fulbright Award
Dr. Antonio Campo, Senior Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded a Fulbright award. He will spend three months in Chile this summer. Congratulations!

Cardiovascular Biomechanics Competitive Scholarship
The Mechanical Engineering Department has announced the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Competitive Scholarship. This competitive scholarship is for qualified M.S. students in the degree-seeking Mechanical Engineering Program. Follow the link to find the application form with more details.

Dr. Michaelides to be New Editor of Journal of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics (JNET)
Prof. Efstathios Michaelides, the Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering, was elected to be the new editor (for America) of the Journal of Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics (JNET), starting in March 2009. There are two editors of JNET, one in Europe and one in America. The Journal was established by the late Ilya Prigogine (Nobel Prize for Chemistry, 1977) and is now in its 35th year of publication.

ME Undergraduate Student among the Winners of Best Poster Award
ME undergraduate student Shawn Lamm is among the winners of best poster award at the SACNAS National Conference at Salt Lake City, Utah for his poster entitled “Testing the critical pressure of arteries at bending and torsion buckling”. Lamm was a McNair Scholar during the summer of 2008 and he performed research in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Hai-Chao Han. Lamm was one the 30 students who were selected as winners among a total of 600 students who participated in the conference.

ME student Rick Martinez presents at Bioengineering Conference among five finalists
Rick Martinez an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student presented his paper entitled “The Critical Buckling Pressure of Veins” at the 2008 Summer Bioengineering Conference, held in Marco Island, Florida. He was one of five finalists among a total of more than twenty students in the paper competition. Rick works with Dr. Han in his research projects.

Dr. Michaelides receives ASME Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Michaelides, Professor and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department received the ASME Distinguished Service Award. The award was presented to Dr. Michaelides by Dr. Urmila Ghia, chair of the Fluids Engineering Division during the ASME-JSME joint summer meeting. Follow the link for the photograph.

Dr. Randy Manteufel elected as an ASME Fellow
Dr. Randy Manteufel, an associate professor of Mechanical Engineering department, has been elected as a Fellow of ASME. Only less than 3% of ASME members have had the privilege being elected as a Fellow. Congratulations!

Dr. Millwater Inducted Into Tau Beta Pi
Mechanical Engineering's Dr. Harry Millwater will be inducted into Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society on April 18th, 2008. According to the Tau Beta Pi Association, "Dr. Millwater has been chosen for his experience and excellence in engineering and scholarly work."

Dr. Cliff Moses Receives IASH Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Cliff Moses of ME Department receives the IASH Lifetime Achievement Award. The IASH is the International Association for Stability Handling and Use of Liquid Fuels. The lifetime achievement award is one of the highest awards of the Association. Congratulations to Dr. Moses!

ME Students Won Second Prize in ASME Competition
A student design team of UTSA-ME Department won second prize in a competition of the ASME Student Professional Development Conference held April 13-14, 2007 at UT-Pan Am in Edinburgh, Texas. The team designed, constructed and competed with a prototype Human Powered Potable Water Still which can be easily stored, transported, and assembled. Supported by Boeing, the conference was held for students from the International Southwest & Rocky Mountain North America District E. Visit ASME web site for more detail.

Dr. Hai-Chao Han Receives NSF CAREER Award
Dr. Hai-Chao Han has received a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award for his work in cardiovascular biomechanics. The project title will be "CAREER: Biomechanics of Artery Buckling," with the project investigation period being 3/1/2007 to 2/28/2012, and the total grant amount awarded at $400,000. The proposed work for this CAREER project will develop the theory and mechanical model of artery buckling. It will contribute significantly to arterial mechanics and to the understanding and treatment of vascular diseases, as well as to the biomedical engineering education at UTSA.

Dr. Keith Clutter Named Associate Fellow of AIAA
Dr. Keith Clutter has been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). AIAA Associate Fellows are individuals of distinction who have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.

Dr. Simonis Appointed Life Fellow of ASME
Dr. John Simonis has been elected Life Fellow of the ASME. He has more than 35 years of teaching and research experience. In 2005 Dr. Simonis retired from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) as an Institute Engineer. The Life Fellow award recognizes significant engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession.
