What we do

We are interested in developing robotic prototypes and practical control algorithms that would push the state-of-the-art of current systems. We use prototyping tools such as 3D printers and simulations and tools in system identification, optimization, feedback control, and learning. Please see videos for a sampling of the systems we work on.


  Joining the Lab

If you are a current UTSA undergraduate student (Freshman to Senior) or graduate student (Masters and PhD) and are interested in joining our group please email Pranav Bhounsule, pranav.bhounsule AT utsa.edu 

    For UTSA Masters student - It is recommended that you join the lab early, ideally, in your first or second semester. The earlier you join, the higher are your chances of doing well at MS Thesis/project. I normally dont fund a Masters student unless he was worked with me before or has done very well in one of my courses.

    For UTSA undergraduates - If you are looking for Senior Design Project and/or Independent study project, please get in touch. For Independent study, you need to have a GPA > 3.3 to meet the ME Dept. cut-off and be a Junior or Senior. It would be ideal if you have taken a class with me before, but not required.

If you are a high school student in San Antonio and looking for a research experiences in Robotics in summer please email Pranav Bhounsule, pranav.bhounsule AT utsa.edu

If you are NOT a current UTSA student and are interested in joining our group you will have to first be admitted to UTSA. For Masters and PhD students you need to apply to the graduate school. After you get admitted to UTSA please email Pranav Bhounsule, pranav.bhounsule AT utsa.edu. I do not make admission decisions, but the graduate committee does, and so I cannot comment on your chances of getting admitted.

The thesis led to two world records on legged robots in 2011 which have both been broken in 2015 (see below):

1) The robot walked non-stop for 40.5 miles or 65 kms on a single charge without being touched or recharged (Click for video)

This record has been surpassed by Chinese robot Xingzhe No.1  in 2015 walking a distance of 83 miles (~ 134 km) in 54 hrs.

2) The same robot (in a seperate trial) walked with Total Cost of Transport (TCOT = Energy used per unit weight per unit distance travelled) of 0.19 and marginally better then 0.2 achieved by Collins walker. Note that humans have a TCOT of 0.32. (Click for video)

This record has been surpassed by robot Cargo (Fumiya IIda) in 2015.  Robot Cargo achieved a TCOT of  0.1.

Cornell Ranger walks a 40.5 mile (65 km) ultra-marathon

Cornell Ranger's most energy-efficient walk with a Total Cost of Transport (Energy used per unit weight per unit distance moved) of 0.19. This is the lowest TCOT ever achieved on a legged robot.
